Music

At St. Edmund's we aim, through the teaching of music, to engage pupils in a creative, interesting and enjoyable activity. In so doing we will provide opportunities to develop pupils' understanding and appreciation of a wide range of different kinds of music. In addition children will acquire knowledge and skills needed both to make music and to make informed judgements regarding music quality.

Through emphasis on action songs, musical games and group and class performances, children in the Foundation Stage begin to explore the feelings and thoughts that can be stirred by music.

Throughout their time in Key Stage One children are encouraged to listen carefully and respond physically to a wide range of music. They play musical instruments and sing a variety of songs from memory. With increasing confidence and creativity, pupils are able to explore and enjoy the way sounds and silence can create different moods and effects.

During Key Stage Two children sing songs and play instruments with increasing confidence, skill, expression and awareness. They improvise and develop their own musical compositions in response to a variety of different stimuli. They explore their thoughts and feelings through responding physically, intellectually and emotionally to music from different times and cultures.
