Science
Science is a core curriculum subject, which is taught throughout the school in line with the Early Learning goals and the National Curriculum programmes of study for Key Stages 1 and 2.
Science teaching at St.Edmund's aims to:
1.) Provide pupils with rich and stimulating scientific experiences.
2.) Present science as a practical subject based largely on firsthand experiences in relevant contexts.
3.) Encourage pupils to discuss scientific ideas and develop investigative approaches to scientific enquiry.
4.) Create a sense of scientific curiosity and enable pupils to develop high levels of knowledge and understanding.
At the Foundation Stage, Early Years pupils follow the Early Learning Goals and they:
1.) Investigate objects and materials using their senses;
2.) Find out about and identify some features of living things, objects and events;
3.) Look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change in the world around them.
In Key Stages 1 and 2 pupils cover the programmes of study which have 4 elements:
(Sc1) Scientific Enquiry - pupils develop investigative skills through planning and conducting practical work, obtaining, presenting and evaluating evidence. (Sc2) Life Processes and Living Things - pupils learn about living things. They focus on plant life and habitats as well as human growth and development. (Sc3) Materials and their Properties - pupils group and classify materials and investigate their properties. (Sc4) Physical Processes - pupils explore electricity, forces and motion, light and sound and the Earth and beyond.
