Design and Technology

Design and Technology is a foundation curriculum subject, which is taught throughout the school in accordance with the Early Learning goals at the Foundation Stage, and the National Curriculum QCA programmes of study for Key Stages 1 and 2.

Using design as an educational tool is a highly successful way for children to learn about how things work and to build their own designs. Pupils are encouraged to identify needs and opportunities for design and to generate design proposals, which they can create with confidence.

At the Foundation Stage pupils:

(K4) Ask questions about why things happen and how things work;
(K5) Build and construct with a wide range of objects, selecting appropriate resources and adapting their work where necessary;
(K6) Select the tools and techniques they need to shape, assemble and join the materials they are using;
(K7) Are encouraged to find out about and identify the uses of everyday technology.

At Key Stages 1 and 2 pupils follow the National Curriculum programme of study and pupils:

1.) Develop, plan and communicate their own skills;
2.) Are taught to work with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products;
3.) Evaluate the processes they experienced and the products they made;
4.) Gain knowledge and understanding of materials and components they use.
